Welcome to the reading material for the Space Colonization class discussion! Let's start by looking at the living environment you see in front of you. Unless you have a huge wide screen for your computer you must scroll to see the full picture. What you see is a futuristic painting of the living environment inside a space station called a Torus Ring. You can travel along and around the ring and eventually come back -- from behind -- to the same location. Some time in the future this might happen. And sometime even further into the future this might be the inside of a space ship taking humankind to another solar system to find another earth-like planet. Such a trip would take several human generations, and the persons starting the trip would not be alive when arriving to the new star, younger than ours, feeding the distant solar system with necessary light energy.
