Joint Professional Day between Biology and AH Faculty

On Friday, August 25th, 2006, a joint professional day was held between STC Allied Health Departments and Biology Department. This joint faculty day was held in conjunction with the STC All Faculty Professional Development Day on the Pecan Campus. As all of the students entering the two-year Allied Health Programs require Anatomy and Physiology as a pre-requisite course, it was important that the faculty met and discussed instructional methods that would better provide for student success once admitted.

The morning program was held on the Pecan Campus in a biology classroom and the first activity consisted of two conversational circles with AH faculty introducing themselves to biology faculty and vice versa. The second part of the morning was "a bag of tricks" activity where everyday items were placed in a paper bag and from these items scientific concepts could be explained to students with respect to the systems of the body.

The afternoon program moved from the Pecan Campus to the NAH Campus and consisted of a tour of the facilities with presentations by the AH faculty in their respective departments. Faculty discussed the body systems that are emphasized in their program curriculum. Chairs of the joint faculty day were Diane Teter in Biology and Espy Brattin of the OTA program. Also assisting from biology were Luci Nell Simpson, Terry Tijerina, and Jan A. Nilsson, historian/photographer. Thanks to Max Abbassi, biology chair; Mario Reyna BSMT Dean, and Wanda Spratt, Dean of NAH for their support in this educational endeavor. Also thanks to Lee Hudson Grimes, professional development coordinator, for her cooperation and assistance in this day.
